Udder madness! Protesting dairy farmers cause Cagliari team to miss flight ahead of Serie A match with AC Milan

Serie A side Cagliari were caught in a bizarre situation on Saturday when they were blocked from leaving their training ground by local farmers protesting milk prices.

The Sardinia-based outfit were due to fly out from their island's airport as they prepared to take on AC Milan at the San Siro on Sunday evening.

But according to local reports, the players and management staff were trapped inside the Asseminello training complex after over 100 protestors blocked the exit.

Farmers have been complaining about low dairy prices in the Italian region and have been filmed throwing away their milk produce instead of selling it.

The bus was later allowed to leave after one of the exits was unblocked but the players faced a race against time to make their scheduled flight to Milan.

In another strange twist, the Cagliari squad were only allowed to escape because they were filmed supporting the farmers by "kicking over the milk", according to Football Italia.

Footage emerged on social media of Nicolo Barella and Alessandro Deiola were among those who participated in the stunt.

Cagliari are currently 15th in the Serie A standings and it was hardly ideal preparation for manager Rolando Maran ahead of a tough away fixture at a rejuvenated Milan side, who sit sixth in the table.
