Uber users can book flights on the app this summer as well as taxis to the airport

You can now book a flight as well as a cab through the Uber app.

The rail hailing service has teamed up with online travel agent Hopper to offer domestic and international flights through the app in the UK this summer.

The new addition means users can book end-to-end travel for domestic and international trips with cars, coaches, trains, planes and transfers all available to pre-book via the Uber app.

To book a flight, Uber app users need to enter their travel details, including where they will be travelling to and from along with dates. Customers will then be able to select their departing flight and returning flight if a round trip.

With major carriers, users will be able to select seats in the app and then pay, just as they would for any Uber service.

Already users of the app can book taxis, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, train journeys across the National Rail network, as well as Eurostar and coach travel with National Express and megabus.

Uber recently started integrated bookings with Heathrow Express, allowing for seamless booking through the airport shuttle service, with journeys to the airport taking 15 minutes.

Andrew Brem, General Manager at Uber UK, said: "We’re incredibly pleased to introduce flight bookings as the latest addition to Uber’s suite of travel booking options. Perfect for business travellers and tourists alike, our new functionality will make the booking and managing of air travel simple and stress-free, with the booking process taking as little as one minute in the Uber app.

"Over the last 12 months with the addition of rail, coach and now flight bookings, Uber is truly a one-stop travel solution."

The new product rollout follows the launch of ‘Directions to pickup’ a new feature that provides user-friendly maps and guides for those looking for Uber pickup points at some of the world’s busiest airports.

Since 2019, public transport information has been integrated into the Uber app to help riders in cities across the UK plan their journeys effectively.

If app-based travel solutions are your cup of tea, then the TrainSwap feature by SeatFrog may be of interest.

The app lets people swap their train tickets if they can no longer make a service, for a fee from £2.50 per ticket.

The service should help people save money on their wrongly booked tickets and avoid the effort of having to find someone else who can take the journey in your place.

The beta version of the app is currently available online and lets users exchange tickets on Northern and LNER routes.

Just shy of 80% of passengers who have missed a train have been forced to rebook their train tickets due to changed travel plans, with two thirds spending up to £100 doing so.

Every year, two-thirds of the 1.8bn rail tickets sold in the UK are advance tickets requiring passengers to take the specific train they are booked on.

One in five people surveyed admitted they show up more than 30 minutes early due to fears of missing their pre-booked train, such is the fear of a ride going to waste.
