Attention all Sydneysiders: Uber’s about to make you an offer you can’t refuse. Well, unless you’re absolutely married to your gas-guzzling chariot, that is.
Uber is launching a cheeky little experiment called “One Less Car”. They’re on the hunt for 2,000+ brave souls in Sydney to ditch their wheels for a whole month. That’s right, from March 17 to April 13, you could be living your best car-free life, all in the name of science. And get this – it’s not just about saving the planet (though that’s a nice bonus), it’s about saving your hard-earned cashola too.
Now, before you start freaking out at the thought of parting with your precious ride, consider this: according to Uber’s research, the average car costs a whopping $16,000 per year to run, despite sitting idle 95 per cent of the time. Don’t worry, thinking about the things I could do with $16k has also sent me into a spiral about my life choices.
This isn’t Uber’s first rodeo. Last year, they convinced 58 Aussies to go car-free for a month. The result? Turns out, people need at least four transport options to survive without their beloved cars, so Uber’s got you sorted.
Participants will either be chucked into a control group or offered the choice of three mobility subscription bundles. These bundles offer tiered discounts on Uber rides, Uber Eats deliveries, e-bikes, and even public transport subsidies.

These bundles cost between $0 to $100, with the potential to save over $700 throughout the month and in this economy, every bit helps!
Emma Foley, the Managing Director of Uber Australia & New Zealand, said, “Australia’s road to net-zero relies on a fundamental rethink of how people move through our cities, which includes shifting away from our dependence on private cars.” In other words, it’s time to break up with your gas-guzzlers, Sydney.
With walkable cities on the rise and the whole world feeling the stretch in our wallets, this trial honestly could not have come at a better time. If anything, becoming a PT girlie (or if you want a treat, a Metro girlie) will help you save yourself from that rage attack you have while trying to find a park in the city.
So, Sydney, are you ready to break up with your car for a month? It’s like a trial separation, but instead of couples therapy, you get discounted Uber rides and the chance to save some serious coin. Sign-ups are now open HERE.
And if you start feeling withdrawal symptoms, you can literally just play Charli xcx‘s “Vroom Vroom” and you’ll get the same endorphins as a new car smell.
