Former British Airways and Aviva executive Andrew Brem has been appointed to lead Uber’s UK business.

He will oversee all areas of Uber’s mobility business in the UK and report directly to Jamie Heywood, regional general manager for Northern Europe at Uber.

Most recently Brem served as chief commercial officer at British Airways where he oversaw the airline’s commercial operations during the pandemic. He had also previously worked at British Gas where he launched remote heating product Hive.

Brem said the Uber job was an opportunity he “simply could not turn down”.

“Uber is one of the most exciting technology companies in the world as it continues to change the way we move around our cities,” he said.

“The UK has led the way globally in driving forward Uber’s electrification efforts, as well as providing all UK drivers with worker protections such as holiday pay and a pension in what was an industry first.

Brem repaces Ash Kebriti, who has taken on another role at Uber’s European headquarters.

Anabel Diaz, regional general manager for EMEA at Uber, said: “This is a major appointment for Uber and I’m delighted to welcome Andrew to lead our UK rides business.

“He joins with a considerable wealth of operational experience in leading major corporations, often through challenging periods of transformation.”

Uber is riding towards recovery in London after it was granted a two-and-a-half year licence to operate its private hire vehicles in London following  a lengthy legal battle with Transport for London (TfL) over “regulation breaches”.

The ride-hailing firm was previously denied a licence by Transport for London in November 2019 but has been working to convince the regulator it is fit and proper.

Following the recent licence extension, Uber said it was  “delighted” to be able to continue operating in London and that it was “pleased” to have met TfL benchmarks.
