The United Arab Emirates has expressed serious concern over the expanding regional war and emphasized the importance of the United States playing an effective role in diffusing tensions. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, highlighted the critical need for a robust American presence at this juncture, calling for de-escalation across all fronts, including between Israel and Iran.
As a key player in the Middle East's commercial and tourism sectors, the UAE maintains strong economic ties with both Israel and Iran. Gargash noted that while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian made positive statements at the United Nations General Assembly last month regarding Iran's willingness to engage with the West on its nuclear program and disarmament, these sentiments have been overshadowed by the current escalation.
Both the UAE and Iran are significant oil producers, with Iran controlling the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil trade. US President Joe Biden has cautioned against potential Israeli strikes on Iranian oil interests, recognizing the potential for severe disruptions to global oil markets.
Tehran has previously warned that if it faces restrictions on its oil exports, it may retaliate by disrupting oil flows through the region. Such actions could lead to a sharp increase in global oil prices, impacting economies worldwide. Gargash also emphasized the urgent need for ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, underscoring the importance of stability in the region.
