U2 stars Bono and The Edge support Ukraine with gig in metro station

Bono and The Edge from U2 performed in a bomb shelter in Kyiv in Ukraine today after being invited to perform by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Dublin band shared the news in a post on Twitter, revealing that they were invited by the president to perform as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

They said: "President @ZelenskyyUa invited us to perform in Kyiv as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and so that's what we've come to do. - Bono and The Edge #StandWithUkraine."

Bono praised Ukraine's fight for "freedom" during a performance in a metro station in downtown Kyiv on Sunday.

From the platform of a Kyiv metro station, the 61-year-old rock icon belted out U2 classics Sunday Bloody Sunday, Desire and With or Without You.

During a break, U2 singer Bono said: "The people in Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you are fighting for all of us who love freedom."

He added: "We pray that you will enjoy some of that peace soon."

U2 were also joined during their performance by Ukrainian band Antytila.

The surprise performance comes after air raid sirens were heard throughout the night in the Ukrainian capital.
