U2 confirm one band member won't take part in Las Vegas residency

The world-famous Irish rock band U2 will begin an immersive show for a number of dates at the newly opened MSG Sphere, confirming that they will be taking up a residency in Las Vegas.

News of the residency was revealed during an ad break at the 2023 Super Bowl yesterday. In the extended trailer, the band shows reports of an 'unidentified flying object' with a large silver sphere floating through the air.

'U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at The Sphere' will begin in the autumn of this year. The announcement comes just before the release of of the band’s Songs of Surrender – a collection of 40 songs from U2’s back catalogue, re-recorded and reimagined – which will be released on Friday February 17.

The move will reportedly be going ahead without the bands drummer Larry Mullens Jr, who is due to undergo surgery and subsequent rehabilitation. “It’s going to take all we’ve got to approach the Sphere without our bandmate in the drum seat, but Larry has joined us in welcoming Bram van den Berg, who is a force in his own right,” U2 said in a statement, shared with US media.

One of the most recent celebrities to have had successful run of shows at Caesars Palace is Adele. After initially cancelling her residency because she was "not ready", she made a terrific debut on November 18 last year. She apologised to fans but told them that the show was “perfect” and “looked just like how I imagined”.

Thousands of fans travelled from across the US and the world for the first night of the delayed residency, with some saying they could “die happy” after seeing the show. Her residency at the Colosseum continues until March 25.
