Venus Williams will make her 24th U.S. Open appearance later this month after the United States Tennis Association issued the 43-year-old a wild card for the event.
Williams, who is currently ranked 533rd in the world, made her return to the court earlier this year after she was sidelined for six months due to injury. Williams has won the Grand Slam event twice, once in 2000 and again in ’01, and reached the final one other time in 1997—her debut at the tournament. She has also reached the quarterfinals or better 12 other times.
Williams will be joined by former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki as a wild card selection. The 33-year-old Wozniacki ended her retirement and returned to the court last week in the Canadian Open, where she won her first round match before bowing out in the second round. Wozniacki has never won a U.S. Open, but is a two-time finalist in the Grand Slam.
