In a recent incident in the Gulf of Aden, U.S. Navy destroyers successfully intercepted and destroyed seven missiles and drones launched by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The attack targeted the warships and three American merchant vessels under the escort of the destroyers USS Stockdale and USS O'Kane. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or damages resulting from the interception.
According to U.S. Central Command, the destroyers managed to shoot down and eliminate three anti-ship ballistic missiles, three drones, and one anti-ship cruise missile. The specific merchant ships involved in the incident were not disclosed.
The Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that they had aimed at the U.S. destroyers and three supply ships linked to the American army in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. This event is part of a series of Houthi attacks that have been ongoing for months, particularly targeting shipping routes in the region where approximately $1 trillion worth of goods pass through annually.
It is worth noting that the recent escalation in attacks coincided with the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza and Israel's ground offensive in Lebanon. However, a ceasefire was declared in the latter conflict just last week. The USS Stockdale, one of the destroyers involved in this interception, had previously been engaged in a similar attack on November 12.
