A U.S. Marine was arrested in Texas on Thursday for his alleged involvement in two separate jewelry heists that resulted in the theft of over $500,000 worth of jewelry. Marcelo Majeed Hernandez, 18, was identified as the suspect in the burglaries that occurred at David Yurman Jewelry on October 13, 2023, and at Helzberg Diamond on April 5, as reported by Harris County Constable Precinct 4.
During the first burglary at David Yurman Jewelry, a masked suspect used a sledgehammer to break through the front door, smashed display cases, and made off with more than 200 pieces of jewelry valued at over $380,000. In the second incident at Helzberg Diamond, jewelry worth over $170,000 was stolen.
Authorities conducted a thorough investigation that led to the identification of Hernandez as the suspect. Deputies located him shortly after the second heist and apprehended him. Upon his arrest, law enforcement officers found three handguns, $11,000 in cash, and jewelry worth $500,000, including diamonds, in Hernandez's car, a Mercedes-Benz GLA, which had stolen license plates and was captured on surveillance video during the burglaries.
Constable Mark Herman stated that most of the stolen jewelry has been recovered, with efforts underway to locate the remaining pieces. Hernandez, who recently completed his boot camp in the Marine Corps, resides with his parents in the Cypress neighborhood where the thefts occurred.
Hernandez has been charged with two counts of first-degree felony theft and is currently in custody with a bond set at $500,000, according to online records. The investigation into the jewelry heists continues as authorities work to ensure justice is served in this case.
