U.S. Embassy Urges Americans In Syria To Flee Immediately

U.S. military airlifts embassy non-essential personnel due to violence in Haiti

The U.S. Embassy in Syria has issued a warning to Americans currently in the war-torn country, advising them to either leave immediately or be ready to 'shelter in place for extended periods.' The embassy's statement on Monday highlighted the ongoing volatile and unpredictable security situation in Syria, marked by armed conflict and terrorism following the ousting of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Americans are strongly encouraged to depart Syria if possible. For those unable to leave, the embassy recommends preparing contingency plans for emergencies and being prepared for prolonged periods of sheltering in place. It's important to note that the U.S. Embassy in Syria ceased operations in 2012 and does not offer regular consular services.

The State Department's latest advisory advises against travel to Syria due to the significant risks of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, hostage-taking, and armed conflict. The embassy emphasized that it cannot provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Syria.

Americans in Syria requiring emergency assistance to depart are instructed to contact the U.S. Embassy in the country they intend to enter. Additionally, individuals remaining in Syria are urged to keep their cell phones charged for emergencies and stay updated on the news for any developments that could impact internal security.

Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar Assad fled to Russia after rebels captured Damascus earlier this month. In a statement released on Monday, Assad expressed his commitment to a national project and the Syrian people's faith in his leadership.

He affirmed his belief in the people's ability to safeguard the state, protect its institutions, and uphold their choices until the end. The situation in Syria remains fluid, and individuals are advised to exercise caution and stay informed about the evolving circumstances.
