What’s new: U.S. climate envoy John Kerry will visit China from July 16 to 19 to discuss cooperating with Chinese officials on tackling climate change, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced Wednesday.
Kerry will be the third member of the Biden administration’s cabinet to come to China in recent weeks, following treasury chief Janet Yellen’s visit last week and Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s trip in June.
The background: Beijing and Washington are working to stabilize fraught ties amid growing disputes over trade, technology transfer and security strategies.
In January, China’s top climate envoy Xie Zhenhua made an agreement with Kerry to maintain communication on addressing climate challenges together.
The world’s two largest carbon emitters had considered climate change a potential area for cooperation, before Beijing suspended official climate talks with Washington in August after then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
