FIR registered against U.P. Congress chief for promoting enmity over BHU ‘molestation’ incident

The Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against U.P. Congress president Ajay Rai on a complaint from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) unit chief of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for allegedly promoting enmity.

According to the complaint submitted to police by ABVP office-bearer Abhay Pratap Singh, Mr. Rai accused the members of the RSS-linked outfit of being involved in an alleged incident of molestation on the varsity campus, which took place on Thursday.

The case registered against the U.P. Congress chief was lodged under Section 505(2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Lanka police station.

Hundreds of students at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), BHU in Varanasi on Thursday held a protest near Rajputana Hostel after a female student was allegedly stripped and molested within the campus by three unidentified men on a motorbike, leading to a political slugfest.

The State unit of Congress reacted sharply over the FIR, adding that such police cases cannot distract it from fighting for truth.

“State President Shri Ajay Rai asked sharp questions to the government on the matter. It is a civic duty to question the government on such heinous incidents. But, this thing displeased the goons of RSS and BJP’s student organization ABVP. These scoundrels got our state president wrongly sued. In the campus of these worthless people, such a despicable act happens to a student and instead of supporting the girl, they are suing the people standing with her. Why? Well! cases from such organizations cannot distract us from the truth,” said U.P. Congress in a post on X.
