Tyson Fury to be set deadline to decide boxing future after Dillian Whyte KO

Tyson Fury will be given several weeks to decide whether he wants to vacate his heavyweight title and retire from the sport after knocking out Dillian Whyte.

The 'Gypsy King' scored a stoppage victory over Whyte at Wembley last weekend before announcing his plans to retire in the ring. Fury retained his WBC heavyweight title and could face the winner of Anthony Joshua's rematch with Oleksandr Usyk for all four belts later this year.

Fury will be asked to decide if he wants to vacate the belt or if he wants to keep his title and wait for the winner of Joshua's second meeting with Usyk. However, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman will give Fury time to contemplate his future.

Fury is just 33-years-old and remains in the prime of his career and would likely to go into any undisputed fight as favourite irrespective of the opponent. He would also not be forced to take on any fresh mandatory challenge to the belt if he elects to return to the ring after completing his latest test against Whyte.

Despite the possibility of a lucrative mega-fight on the horizon, Fury has claimed that his time is up in the sport and he will not return to the ring even if domestic rival Joshua secures his revenge. Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV, Fury said: “This is the truth, the gospel truth, nothing but the truth - I’m done. Every good dog has its day. Like a great Roman leader said, there will always be somebody else to fight.

“When is enough enough? I’m happy, I’m healthy, I’ve still got my brains, I can still talk. I’ve got a beautiful wife, I’ve got six kids. I’ve got umpteen belts, I’ve got plenty of money. I’ve got success, fame, glory. What more am I doing it for? Boxing’s a very dangerous sport, you can be taken out with one punch as we’ve seen on Saturday night.

"It only takes one unlucky blow and you may not get up from the canvas. I’m quitting while I’m ahead. I’m undefeated, only the second man in history to retire undefeated heavyweight champion."

Despite announcing his retirement, Fury's promoter Frank Warren and sparring partner Joseph Parker are seemingly against his plans to hang up his gloves. Fury is yet to be defeated in the ring and could cement his legacy further by becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis.

Fury's father John believes that his son will definitely jump at the possibility of an undisputed fight. “I hope he (Joshua) does beat Usyk, I really do, I’m rooting for him,”Fury Sr told talkSPORT. I’d be sick if Usyk won. Nothing against Usyk, he’s a great guy but my heart lies with the Watford man. If AJ can win, wild horses couldn’t keep Tyson in retirement.”
