Tyson Fury's boxing history lets him down as he makes false heavyweight boast

Tyson Fury made an error by claiming he is the first heavyweight to take two trilogy fights ahead of his third meeting with Derek Chisora.

The 'Gypsy King' has elected to halt his retirement plans and will make a voluntary defence of his WBC crown against Chisora at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Saturday. It will be a second trilogy bout for the British star having already fought 'WAR' in two wins back in 2011 and 2014.

Fury has already successfully come out of a trilogy on top having defeated Deontay Wilder in a third meeting last October, to add to his previous win against the 'Bronze Bomber'. In the build-up to the clash, Fury has claimed he is the only one in history to record the feat, but unfortunately others have already completed the double set.

He boasted in an interview: "I will make a comeback and we got the fight which was difficult. We tried to make the fights with Usyk and Joshua but it didn't happen. Derek Chisora stepped up to the plate and manned up, he really showed big b***s.

"Here is a fun fact I will be the first heavyweight champion in history to complete two heavyweight trilogies which is crazy really."

Fans were quick to react to the interview, with one writing: "There have been multiple heavyweight title trilogies throughout boxing history. It’s nothing new or unprecedented." Another agreed: "Been 19 hours and they still haven’t corrected this obvious mistake that should have never happened in the first place. For f*** sake."

One fan pointed out other trilogies: "Ali had 2 trilogies. One with Fraizer, one with Norton. This t***er just lies and talks s***." Another was unmoved by the record, adding: "Why is this something to brag about achieving? Beating the same person multiple times.

"It gives amateur boxing vibes where young lads end up fighting each other three or four times because you're from the same area. There's no desire for more. Or to give the paying fans more."

Legendary heavyweight Muhammad Ali indeed fought in two historic trilogies against Joe Frazier and Ken Norton during his illustrious career. Evander Holyfield also joins the club in history having fought Riddick Bowe and John Ruiz three times during his time in the professional ranks.

However, it is unclear if Fury meant that he will indeed become the first British heavyweight champion to compete in multiple trilogies, and could even accept a fourth fight against Wilder next year. The 'Gypsy King' has stated he is open to the showdown if the American is stated as the leading contender.

"Who here would not want to see me versus Wilder for a fourth time? Not very many people," Fury said. "I’ve been over there [the United States] three times now, if he wants the fourth fight he’s got to come to England."
