Tyson Fury Announces Shock Retirement From Boxing

Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from boxing with immediate effect following back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.

The Gypsy King Retires From Boxing

Tyson Fury revealed the shocking news of his retirement in a post to his fans on Instagram on Monday afternoon.

‘Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet,’ Fury said in the clip.

‘I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it.

‘I’m going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side. GET UP!’

Fury has become a popular figure in British boxing over the past decade.

After the high of beating Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, he was forced to take a hiatus due to his mental health struggles.

But in 2018 he announced his full comeback after losing ten stone to get back in shape.

There will be some who question whether Fury’s announcement is serious. Fury announced his retirement after beating Dillian Whyte in April 2022 but returned six months later.

Things have changed though as the 36-year-old has lost his heavyweight belts, and failed to win them back with two defeats on what was his previously unbeaten record.

The Briton enjoyed two stints as heavyweight champion and retires with a record of 34 wins, two defeats and one draw.

Retirement For Tyson Fury Comes After Oleksandr Usyk Defeats

Tyson Fury held a stunning undefeated 34-0-1 record after beating the likes of Dillian Whyte, Derek Chisora and Francis Ngannou in recent years.

The Gypsy King went into his first fight with Oleksandr Usyk on the back of an underwhelming display against former UFC star Ngannou.

Fury had pulled out of the original bout with Usyk due to his bout with Ngannou. It was then delayed further after the Gypsy King suffered a nasty cut above his eye in preparation for the bout.

The 36-year-old suffered the first defeat of his career back in May to Usyk. Usyk outclassed Fury, knocking him down in the ninth and getting a split-decision victory.

As part of the contract signed for the world title showdown, Fury activated his rematch clause.

However, despite an impressive display, Fury lost again, with this defeat coming via unanimous decision – though many argued the scorecards should have been closer.

Fury Announcement Is Blow To Battle of Britain Hopes

Tyson Fury’s retirement is a blow to those hoping he would fight Anthony Joshua in a Battle of Britain showdown.

British boxing fans had been longing for a match between the pair for many years.

However, varying factors have meant that the pair have not faced each other, and with Fury’s retirement, may never meet in the ring.

The pair have in the past been tied to facing different opponents, while Joshua suffered a number of costly defeats which put a bout with Fury on the back-burner.

There have also been reports suggesting the pair couldn’t agree financial terms over a fight.

It had been hoped that they could agree to a match in 2025 but that looks unlikely after Fury’s announcement.
