Tyrone vs Derry: Player ratings from Sunday's Ulster SFC quarter-final clash

Tyrone player ratings

Niall Morgan

Put two kick-outs over the sideline in the first half and conceded the penalty which Shane McGuigan converted. Was also caught off his goal-line a few times in the second half. 6

Michael McKernan

McKernan is used to playing on the edge and an early yellow card limited his ability to nullify Niall Toner. 6

Ronan McNamee

Bizzarely hand-passed the ball to Oran Lynch in the second half at a time when Tyrone needed to engineer a goal. Failed to exert his usual influence on the game. 6

Padraig Hampsey

A tough day for the Tyrone skipper. Shane McGuigan’s movement brought the Coalisland defender out of his comfort zone. 6

Rory Brennan

Deployed as a sweeper against Fermanagh, Brennan reverted to a more familiar man-marking role on Sunday. Benny Heron scored two points from play and was withdrawn after 55 minutes. 5

Peter Harte

He hasn’t had too many down through the years, but Sunday was a rare off day for Peter Harte. Ethan Doherty caused him plenty of problems and Harte never had a shot at the posts. 5.5

Frank Burns

Won his fair share of possession in the early stages and his distribution was generally sound. It has to be assumed he picked up a knock as the Pomeroy man failed to appear for the second half. 6

Conn Kilpatrick

Met his match in the form of Conor Glass and Kilpatrick struggled to match his rival’s aerial ability. Tyrone were already struggling around the middle third when his midfield partner was sent off. 6

Brian Kennedy

Enjoyed some fine performances in 2021, but he’ll want to quickly forget Sunday’s sorry episode. Reckless and needless kick out at Gareth McKinless left Tyrone fighting an uphill battle. 4.5

Conor Meyler

One of only a handful of Tyrone players who have maintained their form from last season. Almost replicated his goal from the Fermanagh game, but Lynch was equal to the shot. Almost single-handedly brought the fight to Derry in the second half, but lacked support. 7

Niall Sludden

A below-par performance from Sludden. Like Harte, he couldn’t get on enough ball carry an attacking threat against a superbly well-drilled Derry defence. 5

Kieran McGeary

The 2021 Footballer of the Year continues to struggle in 2022. Linked up well with Meyler for Tyrone’s only real goal chance, but McGeary failed to win his usual amount of breaks. 5

Darren McCurry

His opening point was a thing of beauty. Unfortunately for Tyrone, the supply just wasn’t there for McCurry on Sunday, who had some decent moments against McKaigue. 6.5

Cathal McShane

Earned and converted two frees and was showing well in the early stages. Can feel slightly aggrieved to have been replaced at half-time. 6

Conor McKenna

Rightfully earned a reprieve to play and was thrown in from the start. Played some good passes, but some of his colleagues weren’t on the same wavelength. Couldn’t complain about either booking, the second of which was daft. 6

Subs:

Darragh Canavan

Can count himself unlucky to have been dropped from the first 15. Took a brilliant catch before converting a mark and also landed a free in the second half. 6.5

Micheal O’Neill

On for the second half for Burns and spent much of his time trying to plug holes in the defence. 5

Ben McDonnell

Replaced Brennan for the final 15 minutes, but the game was already beyond Tyrone’s reach by that stage and McDonnell failed to make an impact. 5

Derry player ratings

Oran Lynch

Stood firm to turn away Meyler’s goal-bound shot midway through the first half and only lost three kick-outs. Solid display from the Derry ’keeper. 7.5

Chrissy McKaigue

Holding Darren McCurry to two points from play is a satisfactory return for any defender and Chrissy McKaigue delivered a typically disciplined performance. 8

Brendan Rogers

Conceded two frees against McShane and also picked up Darragh Canavan in the second half. Looked more comfortable going forward. 7.5

Conor McCluskey

Had spells on different players, including picking up Meyler and Harte when they broke forward. An assured showing from the Magherafelt ace. 7

Conor Doherty (STAR-MAN)

His first point was well-worked, his second was simply stunning. Was involved in a host of other scores for Derry and was fouled for one of Loughlin’s pointed frees in the second half. Tyrone just couldn’t get to grips with the Newbridge clubman. 9

Gareth McKinless

Was in the wars throughout and shipped some heavy tackles. Scored a classy point and put Tyrone on the backfoot on a number of occasions with runs from deep. Operated at midfield in the first half and was deployed as the spare man in the second half when Tyrone lost Kennedy to a red card. 8.5

Padraig McGrogan

Dropped one shot at the posts short, but was sound when it came to his defensive duties and rarely wasted a ball. 7

Conor Glass

Derry were able to boss the midfield exchanges and Conor Glass was the standout midfielder on Sunday. Comfortably won his duel with Conn Kilpatrick and took some wonderful catches. 8

Niall Toner

Drafted in late on as a replacement for Emmett Bradley, but looked very assured in his role. Perhaps a tad fortunate that his yellow card wasn’t a black card and Gallagher took no chances by calling him ashore on 55 minutes. 7

Paul Cassidy

Showed great determination to win the vital penalty in the first half and enjoyed a great battle with Meyler throughout Sunday’s quarter-final. 7

Shea Downey

Named at centre-forward, but Downey dropped back as Derry defended in numbers and built a blanket defence which smothered Tyrone. 7

Ethan Doherty

Took his point well and was always available to help out his defence. A solid display from the Glen attacker. 7

Benny Heron

Scored a point in each half and got the better of Rory Brennan. Made a lot of unselfish runs which helped create space for both McGuigan and Loughlin inside. 7.5

Shane McGuigan

Was Derry’s leading scorer in the League and McGuigan posted 1-4 against the All-Ireland champions on Sunday. Struck his penalty decisively and his two points from play were pure class. 8

Niall Loughlin

The bare stats will say Loughlin only scored one point from play, but several of his frees were difficult kicks under pressure. Also converted a 45 and finished with 0-7. 8

Subs:

Emmett Bradley

Was listed to start, but enjoyed a good cameo when replacing Toner for the final 15 minutes and took his mark well. 6.5

Padraig Cassidy

The Slaughtneil ace was an automatic starter for Derry during the League and will benefit from the game time for their Ulster SFC semi-final. 6

Lachlan Murray

A future star for Derry, he’ll be keen to see more game time in the coming weeks. 5

Paul McNeill - not on long enough to be rated

Ben McCarron - not on long enough to be rated
