Since arriving in Miami back in March, Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has been effusive in his praise of his new quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
When the Twitter world was going crazy over a video that the team put out from their own account showing Tagovailoa underthrowing the wideout, Hill was quick to respond with a video of his own.
He’s spoken on his new podcast, “It Needed to be Said,” nearly every week about his quarterback. Some of his statements comparing him to his former quarterback in Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes, even got Hill into some trouble.
Monday, Hill continued his efforts on ESPN’s “First Take.”
It’s been widely reported that the Dolphins and New York Jets were the two teams heavily interested in Hill this offseason, and on “First Take,” Hill was asked about his decision to choose the aqua and orange over the green and white.
“Zach Wilson is a dog, but I’d rather play with the most accurate quarterback in the NFL,” Hill said. He later added, “Obviously, Tua, he’s not your typical gunslinger, but if you were to just pay attention to his game, everything is spot on, everything is pinpoint, ball is on time. His fundamentals are on point. He takes the time to make up in other areas and be great in other areas that other quarterbacks may not be good at.”
The accuracy is important to Hill. That was a big part of the conversation when he was comparing Tagovailoa and Mahomes. In 2021, Tagovailoa completed 67.8% of his attempts, putting him seventh in the league in completion percentage for qualified quarterbacks.
Then, there’s the drive to compete and win that Hill praised as well.
“Tua, he’s a [expletive] heck of a competitor,” Hill said. “He’s a hell of a hard worker. I’m excited to go to work with him, compete with him and battle with him… This dude came from Alabama. If you know Alabama, they’re playing some of the biggest games in college football. I’ve had a chance to play with him, practice with him and see his confidence. I’ve had a chance to golf with him. He’s a good guy, obviously, but I see a lot of similarities when I look at him and when I see Patrick [Mahomes]. He’s definitely on to something.”
With veterans reporting to training camp on Tuesday, Hill and Tagovailoa will continue to put in the work to show that the Dolphins can be contenders this year and that they have the right quarterback in the system.
