Type 2 diabetes warning signs to look out for in your feet

Type 2 diabetes is a common condition that affects many people across the UK. This type of diabetes causes the level of sugar in the blood to become too high.

Many symptoms include excessive thirst, needing to wee a lot and tiredness. The lifelong condition can affect people's every day lives but can also increase the risk of getting other serious problems.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by problems with insulin in the body and is often linked to being overweight, inactive or having a family history of the disease. People with the condition have been warned to check their feet daily for signs.

The NHS say that diabetes can reduce the blood supply to the feet and cause a loss of feeling. It means that injuries to the feet will not heal well and people may not even notice their foot is sore or injured.

They recommend that people with type 2 diabetes keep the feet clean and dry to avoid infection. The NHS also suggest not going barefoot outside to avoid getting any cuts as well as recommending people to wear shoes that fit well.

People with type 2 diabetes must speak to their GP or diabetes nurse if they notice any changes in their feet. That includes cuts, cracks or blisters as well as any pain or tingling.

You should also go to the doctors if you get numb toes and feet. Diabetes patients should get their feet checked every year by their GP, diabetes nurse or podiatrist.

If left untreated, sores and infections can lead to gangrene. The NHS say that around 175 amputations resulting from diabetes are carried out each week in England.
