A North Tyneside search and rescue team has launched a crowdfunding bid in the hope of raising enough money to replace and renew life-saving equipment.
Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade's volunteers are regularly called out to emergencies along the North East coast, while they also operate in the region's waterways when required. The charity has a minimum annual fundraising target of around £35,000 to be able to operate.
Increased visitor numbers have increased the amount of callouts with 2021 the busiest year since the brigade's formation in 1864, while the total for 2023 already stands at 64. This has put financial pressure on the charity, with their annual insurance renewal alone estimated to cost close to £10,000.

The increasing demand for the services have led to the TVLB expanding, and it will soon welcome a second rescue vehicle for the first time in its 150-year plus history, which was donated by a benefactor. However, it must raise further cash to equip the vehicle and replace out-dated equipment and PPE.
Life-saving equipment such as ropes, harnesses, helmets, descenders, stretchers and first-aid equipment also need to be regularly renewed or replaced to ensure that team members are safe during callouts.
In June, the TVLB hosted the 'King Eddies' Stair Challenge,' which its volunteers say generated tremendous support from the local community. But more is needed and the group has now launched a crowdfund looking to raise more than £8,000.
Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade captain Peter Lilley said: "The TVLB is seeking the community's support to achieve their goal and save more lives in North Tyneside. Donations, no matter how big or small, will make a meaningful impact, ensuring the team meets its crowdfunding target.
"We are incredibly grateful for the on-going support we have received from our community. Their contribution to our crowdfunding campaign will enable us to enhance our capabilities and continue our life-saving work along the coast. Every pledge and donation matters, and together, we can make a difference."
The North of Tyne Combined Authority have pledged half of the requested amount (£4,250) on the proviso that the brigade raise the other remaining half by the end of this summer. To find out more or to make a donation, click here.
