The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels have reopened ahead of schedule after a fault with a lift.
ChronicleLive reported on Tuesday that the Grade-II listed tunnels, which connect Howdon on the North bank of the Tyne and Jarrow on the south, would remain closed until Monday January 9. They had been closed due to a problem with the North side vertical lift, which had first occurred on December 31 2022.
However, the tunnels were reopened on Friday afternoon after works were completed earlier than expected. It means that both tunnels are once again open 24 hours a day and the free replacement bus service that had been running between Howdon and Jarrow has been withdrawn.

A statement on the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels website read: "We are pleased to confirm the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels have now reopened for all users as of 2pm 6 January 2023. The tunnels are now open for all 24 hours each day and the replacement bus service is being withdrawn.
"Thank you for your patience while we have worked with engineers to resolve the issue. Once again we apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."
The installation of the two glass lifts on either side of the Tyne was one of the final parts of the tunnel's costly refurbishment to be completed after they reopened to the public in 2019.
