TY student robbed of €600 coat by gang of youths in broad daylight down Drumcondra lane

A TY student has been left shaken after he was mugged by a gang in broad daylight on his walk home from Dublin city centre.

The 16-year-old boy was left devastated as the expensive Canada Goose jacket he had spent weeks saving was robbed by the gang.

The alleged mugging happened at around 1pm on Tuesday in Drumcondra, and the boy's father was horrified that such an attack could take place on a busy street in the middle of the day.

He told RTE Liveline listeners that the thugs had covered their faces so that they couldn't be identified.

The worried dad said: "This was at 1 o'clock in the day. It's a place called Millmount Avenue in Drumcondra.

"He was coming back from town and they called over to him. They were standing at the corner of the lane. There's a little lane that run between Millmount Avenue and Millbourne Avenue.

"Of course, he wandered over to them. He wasn't thinking. They had scarves that they pulled up over their faces so he couldn't see their faces.

"Two young fellas came out of a lane and said 'give me your jacket!'"

The young man had spent the whole run-up to Christmas working as a sales assistant so that he could afford the luxurious coat.

His father said: "My son worked in Dunnes in Stephen's Green from the last week of November to Christmas Eve basically.

"He's in Transition Year. He's a young fella. He's only 16. He got paid his money and in the end his money was around 1200 quid.

"He treated himself. He came home with one of these fancy bags and he took the jacket out. It was a Canada Goose jacket. He spent €600 on the jacket.

"They took the jacket off him and that was basically what he worked the whole month of December for."

The young worker begged for his phone back as it was an old model and would not be much use to the gang.

His dad said said: "They took his phone but they gave him back his phone because it's an old phone.

"His phone is six or seven years old so they knew they weren't going to get anything for the phone.

"But basically, his whole six weeks that he was slaving away up at Stephen's Green was basically gone.

"He got a shock. They just walked away."

Gardaí are currently investigating the mugging.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are investigating theft which occurred on Tuesday, 8th February 2022 at approximately 3pm near Millbourne Avenue in Drumcondra.

"No injuries were reported. Investigations ongoing."
