Two teens drown in lake as four rescued and urgent safety warning issued

Two men aged just 18 and 19 have died after drowning in a lake in Yorkshire, emergency services say.

Four others have also been rescued after the tragedy at a nature reserve in Tickton near Beverley, East Yorkshire, which happened on Wednesday night.

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service were called to High Eske Nature Reserve in the village, along with police and ambulance crews in the evening after reports of young people entering the water.

A boat and diving teams were deployed to search the small lake in the reserve.

Tragically, despite their best efforts, two of the six people in the water lost their lives.

Humberside Police said the bodies of two teenagers were recovered by diving team members at 8.35pm.

Superintendent Paul Butler said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with both young men’s families and loved ones at this very difficult and sad time.

“We are working together with all the relevant agencies including Humberside Fire and Rescue services, to fully understand the circumstances of the tragic accident.”

A spokesperson for the rescue service said today: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families and friends at this difficult time.

"Crews from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Humberside Police, and Yorkshire Ambulance Services were in attendance and worked together.

"A further four members of the public were rescued from the reserve by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service using a boat and Humberside Police deployed diving teams.

"The Service is working closely with Humberside Police, and the area is currently closed to the public as we continue to investigate this very tragic incident."

Information on the young men's identities has yet to be released, but emergency services have made fresh pleas with the public not to attempt entering lakes and reservoirs during the warm weather.

It comes as another young person, a 16-year-old boy named locally as Tyler Wilson, died after entering the River Calder in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, on Wednesday evening.

The spokesperson added: "The Service would like to stress the importance of remaining safe around open water and the clear advice from the emergency services is that people should not enter the water.

"Open water such as ponds, rivers and lakes etc. are highly dangerous and people should not enter them."
