Two women remain in hospital with leg injuries after dog attack in Newport

Two women are receiving hospital treatment for leg injuries after a dog attack.

Gwent Police said two women were taken to the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran where they remain in a stable condition after the attack in Lliswerry, Newport, on the evening of Wednesday, February 2.

No arrests have been made in relation to the incident and police have yet to confirm the breed of the dog.

Armed police attended the incident at a property in Liswerry, Newport, just before 5pm following reports of a dog attack inside the property.

One resident who wished to remain anonymous said there were about 10 police vehicles at the scene, as well as two fire engines.

The resident said: "They are very normal people. It's shocking. I've heard they are okay at the moment."

Another anonymous resident said: "It's a quiet area. There is one or two nasty dogs but I've always seen them under control. I'd never have thought anything like this would have happened."

Superintendent Vikki Townsend from Gwent Police said: "We were called to a property in Liswerry, Newport at around 4.50pm on Wednesday, February 2, following reports of a dog attack inside the property.

"Armed officers attended to ensure the safety of members of the public.

"Two females sustained injuries and are currently in hospital.

"The dog has been taken to a local kennels while officers remain in the area as they carry out their investigations.

"South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance.

"The public are thanked for their cooperation."

A spokesperson from South Wales Fire and Rescue service said: "At approximately 5.36pm on Wednesday, February 2, we received a special service call to a property on Somerton Park in Maindee, Newport.

"Crews from Malpas and Maindee Stations attended the scene and worked alongside emergency service colleagues.

"A stop message was received at approximately 7:29pm."
