Two Women Have Died In Separate Water Incidents In QLD Over New Year’s

In a tragic start to 2025, two women have lost their lives in separate water-related incidents in Queensland.

On New Year’s Day, a woman’s scuba diving adventure at Wave Break Island, a popular Gold Coast spot, took a turn. Emergency services rushed to the scene at Biggera Waters around 10:10 am after the woman was pulled unresponsive from the ocean at Main Beach.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said that there were five crews were sent to the scene and treated the woman after a scuba diving incident, per The Guardian.

Despite their efforts, the woman was declared dead at the scene.

In a separate incident, a 53-year-old woman’s New Year’s Eve water tubing excursion ended in tragedy. The woman went missing while tubing at a campsite near Emu Creek, north-west of Brisbane. After an extensive search, her body was discovered on Wednesday.

A Queensland Police spokesperson confirmed that the woman’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

Surf Life Saving Australia have reported that 35 people have drowned since December 1, with 22 of these fatalities occurring in coastal areas. Alarmingly, all but two of these deaths were male, and every single one happened outside the flags. Queensland alone has seen four people lose their lives to drowning.

With 1,385 rescues already recorded this summer, it’s clear that water safety remains a critical issue.

As we continue to enjoy the summer, these tragic events serve as a sobering reminder to please always prioritise water safety.
