Two women and a child in hospital after they were 'hit by a drunk driver'

Two women and a child were taken to hospital after the car they were travelling in was hit by the driver of another car - who was arrested on suspicion of drink driving on Saturday evening.

Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to try to piece together what happened in north west Bristol, and suspect the arrested driver may have been involved in another crash five miles away, a few minutes earlier.

The two women were not thought to be seriously injured and the child was unhurt but taken to hospital as a precaution following the crash, which closed a main road in Shirehampton for much of Saturday evening.

The police investigation began when a motorist called police to say their car had been hit by a blue Peugeot 107 which was being driven erratically on the A4174 Avon Ring Road in Filton at around 6.40pm on Saturday evening.

The motorist said the driver of the blue Peugeot failed to stop after the crash, in which no one was hurt.

Then, around 15 minutes later and five and a half miles away on Kings Weston Avenue in Shirehampton, there was a two-vehicle crash involving the driver of a blue Peugeot 107 and a woman driving another car, which saw the two women hurt.

“Two women went to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing,” said a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police. “A young child who was in the vehicle with them has also gone to hospital, as a precaution. A man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving and remains in police custody.

“The road was blocked by the collision and reopened by about 8.45pm following investigations at the scene, recovery of the vehicles and removal of debris.

“Officers investigating both incidents are keen to hear from anyone who has dashcam, CCTV or other footage between 6.30pm and 7pm which shows either collision. If you have any information or footage which could help, please call 101 and give the reference 5222078218,” she added.
