Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will hope Jorginho can provide competition and cover for Thomas Partey as the Gunners bid to win the title.
Finding competition for Partey has proved incredibly difficult over the years and that is a testament to how talented the Ghanaian is.
With Mohamed Elneny out injured, Arsenal had to do something and the £12milliion arrival of Jorginho is a viable short-term solution.
He will likely operate for Arsenal at the base of midfield, playing like Partey as a No6, but he could also play in a midfield two as part of a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Jorginho is a different player to Partey and has contrasting strengths, which makes him an alternative option and not a like-for-like replacement.
The Italian is excellent in possession and likes to dictate the tempo of a game. He does, however, lack Partey's power and ability to break up play.
Jorginho will likely be drafted into the team for Europa League games and matches against lesser Premier League opposition, which should suit him.
Arsenal should have plenty of the ball in those games and Jorginho will relish being able to control the game.
The 31-year-old could also prove handy when Arsenal are chasing a game. He has an eye for a pass and would act as another playmaker, even if he is operating deeper.
Arsenal signing Jorginho may not be exciting, but it is sensible. Arsenal could not afford to leave themselves short.
