Two people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in the Britannia hotel in Manchester city centre.
Fire crews raced to the scene yesterday afternoon (Friday) when the alarm was raised after smoke was spotted inside the hotel. The hotel on Portland Street was evacuated by staff.
A spokesperson for the fire service said two people were taken to hospital from the scene for 'precautionary checks due to smoke inhalation'. The blaze was extinguished by firefighters as a crowd of hotel guests and staff waited outside.

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "At 3pm on Friday 21st October firefighters responded to a 999 call reporting visible smoke inside the Britannia Hotel on Portland Street in Manchester city centre. The hotel was evacuated by staff, and upon arrival firefighters extinguished a small fire in one room.
"Two people were taken to hospital for precautionary checks due to smoke inhalation."
