Two people have been taken to hospital following a two-car crash on the A1(M) in County Durham on Monday afternoon.
The pair were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham by paramedics, though nothing further is yet known about their condition. The police, fire brigade and ambulance all attended the incident, which took place between junctions 61 and 62 - near to Carrville.
The carriageway was closed for several hours, but has since reopened - though long delays were expected to continue. Pictures from the scene showed a black car on its roof in the verge alongside the motorway and and a white car with significant damage to its front.
Durham Constabulary confirmed the police attended "the scene of a two-vehicle collision on the A1(M) northbound, near Carville Interchange" and that it had occurred at around 2.55pm.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ""We were called at 14:51pm to a road traffic collision on the A1 northbound. We sent one clinical team leader, one doctor, one rapid response vehicle and two emergency ambulances."
They also confirmed two people had been taken to hospital.
A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "Three crews from Spennymoor, Peterlee and High Handenhold, together with colleagues from Durham Constabulary and North East Ambulance Service attended a collision between two vehicles between junction 61 and 62 on the A1 near to Carrville just before 3pm this afternoon."
The fire service said the vehicles were made safe and firefighters left the scene at 4.10pm.
