Two taken to hospital after car collides with tree on A167 in Durham

Two people have been taken to hospital following a horror crash during the early hours on the A167 in Durham.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on the A167 southbound in Durham following reports that a car had collided with a tree at approximately 1.49am on Saturday.

The road was subsequently closed by officers from Durham Constabulary and was shut for nearly nine hours between Sniperley Roundabout and Whitesmocks.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed that a number of paramedics were dispatched to the scene along with two ambulances.

One person was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham and a second was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

The NEAS spokesperson said: "We were called at 1.49am this morning (31 December) to attend a road traffic collision between a car and a tree on the A167 southbound in Durham.

"We dispatched a doctor, two ambulances, a clinical team leader and specialist paramedic. One patient was taken to University Hospital of North Durham and a second patient was taken to RVI in Newcastle."

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary issued an update before 8am saying that the stretch of the A167 in Durham would be closed between Sniperley Roundabout and Whitesmocks "for some time".

They said: "The A167 in Durham is currently closed between Sniperley Roundabout and Whitesmocks in both directions. A diversion is in place as the road will be closed for some time."

They confirmed that the A167 had been re-opened at approximately 10.30am.
