Two swimmers pulled from water in dramatic rescue after Broughty Ferry lifeboat call

Two swimmers have been saved in a dramatic late night rescue off Broughty Ferry beach. The local lifeboat crew took less than a minute to find the stricken couple just after 9pm on Sunday night.

One was plucked from the water while the second had managed to scramble to nearby rocks where they were quickly found.

Both people were treated by the RNLI team before being handed on to an ambulance crew for assessment.

A spokesman for the Broughty Ferry lifeboat said: “Broughty Ferry In Shore Lifeboat (D834 - Oor Lifesaver) was launched at the request of Aberdeen Coastguard at 21:04 to reports of 2 people in the water just off Broughty Ferry Castle who appeared to be in difficulty.

“The ILB was in the water within 5 minutes with 3 crew onboard.

“Within 1 minute of launching the crew had located and recovered one person from the water. “The 2nd person had made their way back to the castle rock after finding it too difficult and risky to continue swimming towards the other person.

“Both casualties were then recovered by the ILB back to the Lifeboat Station.

“Upon arrival the casualties were assessed by Lifeboat crew and personnel from HM Coastguard - Angus & Dundee before being passed over to the care of Scottish Ambulance Service for a full assessment.”

The spokesman added: “We would like to remind everyone that the waters and rivers around our coastlines can have a lot of hidden dangers including fast moving tidal currents which can very easily catch even experienced swimmers out.

“If you wish to swim in the open water please take the opportunity to swim within the marked area on Broughty Ferry Beach which is currently manned by Lifeguards from RNLI Lifeguards Scotland between the hours of 10:00 to 18:00 daily.”
