Authorities have confirmed that two suspects, Destry Jones, 20, and Damien Hinson, 18, both residents of Dover, have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Camay Mitchell De Silva, 18, at Delaware State University.
The incident, which occurred on April 21 outside a residence hall on campus, resulted in De Silva being shot in the head. Investigators have indicated that she was not the intended target of the gunfire.
Jones was apprehended at an apartment in Brooklyn, New York, while Hinson was arrested in the parking lot of a Dover shopping center. Jones is awaiting extradition to Delaware on charges including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Hinson, facing similar charges, is currently held in a Delaware prison with bail set at over $3 million cash.
According to investigators, the Dover police department, in collaboration with campus police for night and weekend safety patrols, responded to reports of gunshots around 1:40 a.m. on the day of the shooting. Simultaneously, campus police received reports of shots fired during a fight near a dormitory.
Shortly after, a separate call alerted authorities to a woman found injured outside another dormitory, later identified as De Silva. It was determined that De Silva was not involved in the initial altercation.
Further investigation revealed that Jones and Hinson were part of a group engaged in a fight with two other males prior to the shooting. Both suspects are also facing attempted murder charges related to the two other males involved in the altercation.
