Two Scottish islands named among 'best adventures' in world to tick off bucket list

From magical rolling munros to the ink-black lochs, there are no shortage of adventures to be found in Scotland if you know where to look.

And now two Scottish islands have featured in a list of the best active holidays you can find around the world. With adventure breaks rising in popularity, there are plenty of activities in Scotland for thrill-seekers that will test your limits.

The Times has rounded up 26 adventures to tick off your bucket list in 2023, including beach cleaning on the Isle of Rum and swimming with seals in the Inner Hebrides.

According to the publication, other worldly adventures include mountain-biking along elephant trails in Botswana, skiing in Norway, hiking through Iceland and visiting a monastery in Bhutan.

The Scottish adventure at number 14 on the list is a environmentally-friendly excursion on the Isle of Rum, with the suggestion of heading to the small, car-free island for 'a week of discovery and conservation'. The publication suggests climbing the summits of Hallival and Barkeval to explore the white sands of Kilmory Bay before helping with local beach cleans and wildlife counts.

You can also take a day trip to the nearby island of Eigg. The publication states: "Be warned, though: this holiday may well leave you questioning your present lifestyle".

This week of adventure isn't cheap, setting you back £1,695pp for five nights' full board from Wilderness Scotland.

Thrill-seekers can tick off a cold water swim around the Isle of Skye (PA)

At number 20, thrill-seekers can tick off a cold water swim in the Inner Hebrides that's not for the faint-hearted. With tour operator Swim Trek, you can go from Mallaig aboard a 102ft brigantine rigger where you're even allowed to helm and climb the rigging.

Then you can take a dip in ice cold eaters around Skye, cross to the Old Forge pub on remote Knoydart, and also swim with seals beneath the Cuillins in Loch na Cuilce. Six nights' full board goes from £1,880pp.

The publication adds: "Do expect to swim alongside the grandest scenery in the UK. Don't expect many other bathers. Breathtaking in every sense."
