Two people have been taken to hospital after a horror crash on the M80.
Police have confirmed that the male driver and female passenger of a white Mitsubishi L200 pickup were taken by ambulance to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital following the smash at around 1.30pm on Saturday.
Fire and rescue crews were called to the scene to help free the pair from the car. The driver remains critical in hospital having sustained a serious head injury.
Images from the scene show several emergency vehicles and a Transport Scotland incident support van positioned around the pickup truck as traffic filters by.
The crash closed off the motorway between junctions 6a and 7 at Haggs, between Falkirk and Cumbernauld, while police carried out enquiries into its cause.
The M80 northbound remains closed from J5, Cumbernauld and will remain so for several hours. Two lanes of the southbound carriageway have re-opened, according to road network monitor Traffic Scotland.
One eyewitness commented: "Bad accident. Very long queues in both directions."
Another passerby told the Record that "trauma teams" were at the scene.
Police have issued a public appeal for eyewitness accounts and dashcam footage that could assist them with their investigation.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1.30 pm on Saturday, 5 February, 2022, police were called to a single vehicle road crash northbound on the M80, between J6a and J7, Haggs.
"The male driver of the car and his female passenger have been taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
"The road remains closed in both directions to allow officers to carry out enquiries."
Sergeant Scott Kirkpatrick, of Police Scotland's Road Policing Unit in Stirling, added: "We would like to hear from any motorists who witnessed the crash or anyone who can assist with our investigation.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to assist Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service following a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the M80 at around 1.30pm.
"We assisted with removing casualties from the vehicle."
