At least two people have been pulled from the rubble of a unit block in western Sydney after emergency services responded to reports of an explosion.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales was called to a unit block in Waikanda Crescent, Whalan just before 1pm where rescuers found what remained of the building in Sydney’s west.

Firefighters and other first responders rescued a woman in her 60s and another woman in her 70s from the ruins.

A search and rescue operation was carried out to learn whether anyone else remains missing.

Following this, firefighters found and rescued a small dog from the debris.

The women have been medically assessed and are in the care of paramedics. The dog is also receiving care at the scene.

Emergency services, including police and ambulance are on site. Fire and Rescue New South Wales has more than a dozen units at the scene, including Hazmat, ladder platform appliances and drone teams.

Officers from Mt Druitt police area command were also on scene to assist.

The explosion was large enough that it demolished the townhouse and blew out the windows in neighbouring units in the multi-apartment complex.

The building’s gas supply has been cut and fire crews are working to clear debris with concrete cutters.

The event was so loud it was reportedly heard in nearby neighbourhoods.

Residents and motorists have been urged to avoid the area and police have diverted traffic. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion has commenced.
