Two graduate students at Princeton University in New Jersey were arrested Thursday morning for trespassing, according to a statement released by the university. The incident occurred as a group of individuals gathered for a protest, during which a small number of participants began setting up tents on campus grounds.
The university's Department of Public Safety issued multiple warnings to cease the activity and vacate the area. Despite these warnings, two graduate students were taken into custody for trespassing. As a result, the students have been barred from accessing the campus pending further disciplinary proceedings.
Although the tents were subsequently removed by other protesters, demonstrations at the university are ongoing. In response to the events, Princeton University reiterated its stance on protests in a message to students, highlighting the potential risks associated with certain protest actions.
The university emphasized that actions such as occupying or obstructing access to buildings, establishing outdoor encampments, and sleeping in campus outdoor spaces not only disrupt university operations but also pose safety hazards to participants and bystanders. Such activities can escalate tensions and lead to confrontations, as stated in the university's communication to students.
