Two police officers stabbed in Leicester Square

Two police officers have been stabbed in central London this morning.

Emergency services rushed to Leicester Square, at around 6am, on Friday, September 16 after reports two officers were attacked by a man with a knife. The suspect was tasered and arrested at the scene.

Both emergency workers were taken to hospital, the Metropolitan Police said. It is not yet known the condition of those involved.

The man who was arrested has also been taken to hospital for treatment. Scotland Yard said "Taser was deployed and a male was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker.

"He was taken to a hospital for treatment where he remains at this time. Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing."

The attack comes as London is expected to be extremely busy over the bank holiday weekend, as mourners arrive in the capital to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Thousands are currently lining the streets, in an 11 hour queue, to see the Queen before her funeral on Monday.
