Two planes collide moments before take off as hundreds of passengers evacuated

Two passenger planes smashed into one another while being towed along the runway earlier today.

A total of 229 people had to be evacuated from an Aeroflot Airbus A330-343 after the plane’s wing was hit by a charter aircraft at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow.

The Aeroflot flight was preparing to taxi before takeoff to Beijing.

An empty Royal Flight charter Boeing 777 was being towed at the time of the collision when wings from the two aircraft collided.

There were no immediate reports of casualties on the Aeroflot plane or the ground.

Dramatic footage of the aftermath of the crash appears to show bits of debris strewn across the runway floor.

Passengers from the Aeroflot plane were evacuated to the terminal before being loaded onto another plane.

This afternoon technicians at the airport were examining the two aircraft in a bid to work out what happened.

The Sheremetyevo Alexander S. Pushkin International Airport is one of four international airports that serves Moscow.

It is the busiest in Russia and is named after the country's famed poet.

In 2017 the airport handled 40.1 million passengers via 308,090 planes.

The following year the total number of passengers had increased by 14.3% to 45.8 million.

In may this year an Aeroflot Flight crash landed and caught fire at the airport after returning to the runway due to an on-board malfunction suffered shortly before takeoff.

The tragedy killed 41 of the 78 passengers and crew on board.
