Two people rescued from Edinburgh Cramond after coastguard spot them struggling in water

Volunteers from Queensferry RNLI were forced to respond to three different incidents including two people struggling in the water on Cramond Island.

The volunteers launched on Saturday, August 13, after UK Coastguard personnel spotted two people in the water at the island whilse they were on a patrol. The individuals managed to make it back to the island where they were rescued, recovered to the lifeboat and taken back to Cramond village.

Just as the RNLI were handing the two over to the Coastguard, the lifeboat was immediately tasked to race to attend to someone struggling in the water at Portobello. Fortunately, as the lifeboat got to Leith, they were given the call that the person had managed to save themselves and the lifeboat was stood down.

However, they were then called to a third incident after a 13 metre long boat house suffered a steering failure near Grangemouth. The volunteers raced to the stranded houseboat before establishing a tow and taking it back to Port Edgar.

In their post on social media about the incident, RNLI Queensferry reminded people that they should always carry a means of contacting

Posting the incidents to Facebook, the RNLI posted a number of safety tips for people finding themselves at difficulty at sea, saying: “A few safety tips to remember if you find yourself in difficulty at sea or on the coast;

“Carry a means of communication and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

“Don't attempt to cross a flooding causeway, the speed of the tide and underwater currents can catch you out.

“Dress appropriately for the activity you are undertaking.

“Let someone know where you are going and your estimated time of return.

“If you do end up in the water, lie on your back with your arms and legs stretched out like a star until your body adjusts to the water temperature and your breathing is controlled before then calling for help.”
