Two people killed and a third injured after horror crash in Co Roscommon as gardai close road

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s have died following an early-morning road collision in Co Roscommon.

The single-vehicle crash happened on the R293 between Ballaghadereen and Gorteen, at Edmondstown road, at around 3.30am.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene where three occupants of the car were treated for serious injuries.

One man, who was in his 20s, was pronounced dead a short time later.

A second occupant, a woman in her 30s, was taken by ambulance to Castlebar Hospital where she later passed away.

The third person travelling in the car, a man in his 20s, was taken to the same hospital where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardai have closed the road to allow for a forensic collision investigation and local diversions are in place.

They are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí at Castlerea are appealing for witnesses following a single-vehicle fatal road traffic collision in County Roscommon on Friday, 11th March, 2022.

"At approximately 3:30am Emergency Services and Gardaí attended at a collision involving a car on the R293 between Ballaghadereen and Gorteen, at Edmonstown road.

"The three people travelling in car were treated at the scene by emergency services personnel for serious injuries.

"One of the occupants, male 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. The second, a female in her 30s, was removed by Ambulance to Castlebar Hospital. She has since been pronounced dead.

"The third person, a male also in his 20s, was taken to Castlebar Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

"The crash site remains closed for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R293 at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Castelrea Garda Station on 094-9621630, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
