Two people dead after light aircraft crash in Co Down

Two people have died following a light aircraft crash in Co. Down on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred at Newtownards Airport in the North of the country tonight.

The scene remains closed off by PSNI officers who say there is no further information available at this time.

Police, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, and NI Ambulance Service all attended Newtownards Airfield after the crash.

At one stage, large plumes of black smoke could be seen coming from the area, one eyewitness told Belfast Live.

They said: "The smoke is now gone. There are four or five fire engines from Newtownards and Bangor, two police cars and two ambulances have arrived.

“Large plumes of black smoke [could be seen] over the terminal building."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police and other emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene of a crash involving a light aircraft at Newtownards airport. There are no further details."

A spokesperson for the NIFRS said they were called to the scene at around 8:20 pm and added: "We have three pumping appliances at the scene tonight at Newtownards Airport."

In a statement, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 8.21 pm following reports of an incident on Portaferry Road, Newtownards.

“NIAS dispatched two emergency crews, a doctor and an ambulance officer to the incident,” it said.

“No patients were taken from the scene.”
