Two Ohio State athletes earn Big Ten’s postgraduate scholarships

The student side of the “student-athlete” doesn’t get enough coverage when it comes to the collegiate sports, but we can all do our part to try and change that. So, when you see atheltes excelling in academics and beyond, it’s worth noting and celebrating.

We have one such example of that with the awarding of postgraduate scholarships by the Big Ten Conference. The league chose to give out two scholarships to two athletes from each member institution and Ohio State was no different.

The two student-athlete honorees will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements. The duo from Columbus include Katelyn Abeln (pistol) and Trent DiCicco (lacrosse).

According to announcement from the Big Ten, this year’s recipients represent 15 different sports, and all will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines. Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when working with the conference. However, each student-athletes “must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.”

The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship will be allocated to pay expenses for such things as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the honorees must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
