In a tragic incident in Liverpool, New York, a police officer and a sheriff's deputy lost their lives in a shootout with a suspect on Sunday night. The exchange of gunfire resulted in the deaths of the two law enforcement officers and the suspect involved.
The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. in Liverpool, a town located approximately 6 miles north of Syracuse. The Syracuse Police Department and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office were jointly involved in tracking a vehicle that had previously evaded police pursuit.
Following an unsuccessful attempt by two Syracuse police officers to stop a suspicious vehicle, they managed to identify the license plate and trace it to an address on Darien Drive in Liverpool. Suspecting that the suspect might be armed, the officers sought assistance from the sheriff’s office.
Upon locating the vehicle at the residence, the officers observed what appeared to be firearms inside the car. Subsequently, they heard sounds indicating that someone was handling a firearm from within the house. An exchange of gunfire ensued between at least one suspect and the officers, resulting in fatal injuries to the Syracuse officer, the sheriff’s deputy, and the suspect.
All three individuals were rushed to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where they were pronounced dead. Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the two officers, referring to them as heroes.
Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelly mentioned that a search of the house would be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh described the event as a dark day for the city, stating that it was a realization of their worst nightmare.
