Two Northern Ireland legends make bench in Keith Gillespie 'Best XI'

Keith Gillespie enjoyed a glittering career with clubs including Manchester United, Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers.

He also won 86 caps for Northern Ireland from 1994 to 2008.

The winger played alongside some star-studded players, teammates who won countless trophies including Premier League titles, FA Cups, Champions Leagues and Player of the Year gongs.

But who would make his Best XI, and the bench?

Gillespie offered his thoughts to Andy Greeves in the Northern Ireland vs Kazakhstan match programme on Monday.

Here's who he picked in his squad of 16 - it even includes two of his former international teammates.

Keith Gillespie's Best XI

GK - PETER SCHMEICHEL

I was at Manchester United when Peter Schmeichel was there and he was incredible. I think he's right up there with the best. I played with some other great keepers... Shay Given for Newcastle United as well as Alan Fettis and Maik Taylor for Northern Ireland.

LB - DENIS IRWIN

What you have to remember about Denis is that he wasn't left-footed. He got moved to left back when Paul Parker arrived at Manchester United. But you wouldn't have known because his left foot was just as good as his right foot.

CB - PHILIPPE ALBERT

I played with Philippe at Newcastle - a fantastic centre back with a wonderful left foot. He was brilliant at defending but he had great ability on the ball. He was able to carry the ball out of defence with ease.

CB - GARY PALLISTER

I think there was a level to which he was underrated. He was better on the ball than a lot of people thought and he certainly should have got more England caps. He was very quick.

RB - GARY NEVILLE

I'll have to go with Gary Neville because of his longevity at such a massive club as Manchester United. To play for one club as big as United your whole career, you have to be a special player.

MF - TUGAY

So talented on the ball. I remember being part of a Manchester United squad that played against Galatasaray and the team talk was all about stopping lugay. He was exceptional when I was at Blackburn with him.

CM - ROY KEANE

Roy Keane is the sort of player everyone would want on their team. No nonsense and also supremely talented. He wasn't just a ball winner he was superb with the football, too.

CM - PAUL SCHOLES

I don't think anyone who played in the same team as Scholesy could leave him out of their team! And it was wasn't only his teammates who appreciated him. There are so many great players. like Zinedine Zidane, who talk about what a wonderful player he was.

FW - ALAN SHEARER

How could I possibly leave out Alan Shearer, who I played with at Newcastle? He was strong, he could hold the ball up and he was a player who could score every type of goal.

FW - LES FERDINAND

Especially during the 1995-96 season, when we came close to winning the Premier League at Newcastle, Les was just unstoppable. All you needed to do was get a ball into the box and you knew he'd be on the end of it.

FW - ERIC CANTONA

I was at Manchester United when Cantona was there and he had this aura about him. For United in the 1990s he was the missing piece of the jigsaw and after his arrival they went on to win trophy after trophy.

SUBS

STEVEN DAVIS - What a servant he has been to Northern Ireland: 140 caps and counting!

DAVID HEALY - A great goalscorer who provided so many big moments for us.

DAVID GINOLA - He had an incredible time at Newcastle.

PETER BEARDSLEY - When I was at Newcastle I couldn't believe just how good he was still at 32.

ROB LEE - I didn't realise just how good he was until I was playing with him at Newcastle.
