Two more shops close in Nottingham's Broadmarsh Centre - now just 14 businesses remain

Two more shops have closed down in Nottingham's intu Broadmarsh Centre while the multi-million-pound transformation continues.

Swop N Save, an exchange shop for games, phones and gadgets has shut. Charity shop ExtraCare, raising funds for retirement villages and small housing developments, has also gone.

Both shops have been cleared of stock and stand empty.

That leaves just 14 shops and businesses open in the shopping centre where a £89m regeneration project is well underway.

Summer 2021 is the scheduled completion date. New shops and restaurants are planned as well as a cinema and bowling alley.

Currently major high street names Boots, Wilko, Savers, Heron Foods and Card Factory are still trading and jewellery shop Warren James, music shop Fopp and health food shop Grape Tree are also open for business.

Fans of Greggs, the last remaining food takeaway in the shopping centre, can get their fix of steak bakes and sausage rolls, and bargain hunters still have charity shop The British Heart Foundation to visit.

Tailors is open near the former bus station entrance for clothing alterations and repairs - and at the Lister Gate end is Mellors' amusements arcade.

The City of Caves continues to welcome visitors, from the re-located entrance near the steps of Nottingham Contemporary.

Nigel Wheatley, centre director at intu Broadmarsh, said: “We’re disappointed to hear that Swop N Save is closing down, a commercial decision taken by the store. On a similar note, ExtraCare’s lease is due to come to an end and this gives us the opportunity to transform the unit as part of the overall regeneration of intu Broadmarsh.

"Of course we wish the teams at both shops well. Redevelopment work at the centre continues to progress well and we’re looking forward to announcing some further new brands very soon that will be joining Hollywood Bowl and The Light Cinema when the new-look intu Broadmarsh is complete.”

The shopping centre redevelopment is part of a wider £250 million regeneration scheme of the Broadmarsh area, to construct a new 1,200-space car park and bus station.

Work is well underway on Collin Street, which will eventually be pedestrianised. Last month a crane was brought in to carry out the phased demolition of the existing front of the shopping centre which is being fitted with steel, glazing and cladding to make way for the new cinema.
