Two million register to vote as General Election deadline approaches

MORE than two million people have registered to vote since Rishi Sunak announced the date of the General Election, according to official figures.

People have until 11.59pm tonight to register to vote in the election next month.

Craig Westwood, director of communications at the Electoral Commission, urged anyone who has yet to register to do so ahead of the deadline.

“Anyone that wants to have their say at the ballot box must be registered to vote before the deadline of midnight on Tuesday,” he said.

“Registering online is quick and simple so don’t put it off any longer.

“Our research shows that some groups of people are less likely to be registered, including young people, private renters and those who have recently moved house.

“If you know anyone who hasn’t yet registered, let them know that time is running out ahead of this general election.”

It comes as figures show that a total of 2,152,086 voter registration applications were made between May 23 and June 17.

On June 13 a total of 330,621 applications were submitted – the highest in a single day so far in 2024.

Over the past 24 hours alone more than 170,000 people have registered.

It comes amid concern about new voter ID laws, which could result in people being turned away from the ballot box if they do not possess an acceptable form of identification.

Passports and driving licences are deemed valid forms of ID – even if they are out-of-date.

But those without ID can also apply for a Voter Authority Certificate before 5pm on June 26.

Last month, experts warned that the requirement for voter ID could significantly impact the election result in Scotland.

People can register to vote using this link or by visiting the UK Government website.
