Two militants shot down, infiltration bid foiled in J&K, says Army

Amid heightened security ahead of the G-20 meet in Kashmir, two infiltrators were killed in an anti-militancy operation at Kupwara in north Kashmir on May 3.

“Around 8.30 a.m., terrorists were sighted by the troops having infiltrated into our side of the Line of Control in the Machhal Sector. Intense firefight ensued resulting in elimination of two terrorists. The bodies were recovered along with two AK series rifles, magazines and huge quantities of ammunition,” Srinagar-based Army spokesman Lt. Col. Emron Musavi said.

The identity of the terrorists and their affiliation were being ascertained.

“This successful intelligence-based operation is yet another example of close synergy between Indian Army, J&K Police and all agencies. The security forces stand steadfast to defeat the nefarious designs of inimical elements supported by our adversary to disrupt peace and harmony of the area,” the Army said.

According to the Army, the operation was based on a specific intelligence input provided by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, about likely infiltration from a terrorist launch pad across the LoC.

“Troops were put on high alert on May 1. A well-coordinated counter infiltration grid was put in place in this rugged and extremely difficult area. A number of additional ambushes, including those of Indian Army and SOG Kupwara, was placed along the likely routes of infiltration,” the Army said.

The Army said the alert troops laid ambushes and braved continuous bad weather, marked by incessant rainfall, poor visibility and significant drop in temperature for two consecutive nights.
