Two men sought by police after leaking bottles of acid left at Tube station

Two men are being hunted for by British Transport Police officers after a rucksack with two bottles of acid was abandoned at a Tube station near the O2 arena.

BTP have released an image of two men they would like to speak with after the rucksack was discovered at North Greenwich Underground Station on Tuesday May 23 around 4.30pm.

Two bottles of a “strong acidic substance” were found inside, BTP said on Thursday.

“It is believed the substance had started to leak and had been abandoned by its owner,” the force added.

Officers would like to speak to the men in these images, as it is believed they may have information which could help the investigation.

London was described as “the acid attack hotspot of the western world” by criminologist Dr Simon Harding in 2019 after a surge in cases.

Children as young as 10 have fallen victim to the attacks, with religious or racial hatred and domestic vioelnce among recorded motivations.

A number of celebrities are set to perform at the O2 arena this year including Madonna and S Club, and the Brit Awards were held at the venue in February.
