Two men on motorbike pull up to smash windows of Mumbles bar in front of shocked customers

A Mumbles cafe bar suffered a "frightening attack" when a masked man threw rocks "the size of small rugby balls" at it, smashing the front door and windows.

Two individuals approached Cakes & Ale in Newton Road on a red motorcycle and wearing black clothing and left the venue with around £3,500 in damages.

It also happened at 10:15pm on Friday evening, when the full restaurant was noticeably "busy and vibrant", leaving customers shocked and frightened. For more stories about Mumbles, click here.

After one of the pair jumped off the motorbike to hurl the objects at the business, they then quickly returned to the motorbike and left the area. Despite nearby customers witnessing the incident, some in the outdoor seating area, nobody was reported hurt.

"It all happened so quickly, thankfully we didn't have anyone sitting in the front windows, otherwise we would be having a very different conversation," said manager Doug Dawson.

"We have not provoked anyone. Anything we suspect at this point is purely speculation. It's confusing, infuriating and rather heart-breaking considering the costs. It is completely mind blowing."

The venue has asked witnesses or anyone with information surrounding the incident to contact them in what they have described as a calculated attack.

"The actions were carried out in a very methodical and organised way, the police don't have anything to go on. The bike was stolen and the individuals both had helmets on. In three seconds he caused around three and a half thousand pounds worth of damage, there's not a great deal for the police to go on," added Doug, who has been with the business since it first started in 2019

An estimated 20 people witnessed the frightening incident and the venue is now investing in more CCTV in the hope of deterring any more attacks.

But due to a national shortage of building materials, they can't repair the front of their business anytime soon.

"We currently have half our windows boarded up and the door so we have to keep the door open when customers don't necessarily want it. If I close that door we look as if we are boarded up for a zombie apocalypse" said Doug.

He said the lasting damage had left them with reduced capacity alongside an increasing number of cancellations that had left them concerned.

Despite the recent vandalism, the venue remains hopeful for the future following the loving support it has received from the community and is urging anyone with information to contact the police or themselves on social media.

Frequent visitors of the popular bar on Newton Road have been left "shocked" and "disgusted" by the crime with many offering their sympathies.

Cllrs Mark Child, Myles Langstone, Des Thomas, Will Thomas and Linda Tyler-Lloyd have all offered a joint statement on the incident: “This was a shocking act, a deliberately targeted and very dangerous act of vandalism, completely out of place and intolerable in the community of Mumbles. If anyone has any information we would urge them to give it to the police.

"We hope the people of Mumbles continue to support this local business and show that such acts are not only considered despicable, but are also entirely counter-productive.”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: "Shortly after 10.30pm on Friday, September 24, South Wales Police were called to a report of damage being caused at a business in Newton Road, Mumbles. Anyone with information is asked to contact South Wales Police quoting 2100337653."
