Two men have been charged with drug trafficking offences at Victoria’s Beyond The Valley music festival on Monday.
While most of the nation is gearing up to welcome in the new year, music lovers have rallied to Victoria for the annual Beyond The Valley music festival, featuring musical acts like Ice Spice, Tinashe and Royel Otis.
Alongside the big acts, Beyond The Valley 2024 is also the first festival in Victoria to provide mobile pill-testings to its punters.
While Victoria rolls out its first-ever pill-testing, authorities have said it has arrested two Victorian men with drug trafficking charges.
Victoria Police say officers at the festival intercepted a 28-year-old South Yarra man and found what is alleged to be 17 MDMA pills, four grams of cocaine and seven other pills that are believed to be drugs.
A second man, a 27-year-old from Rippleside, was also charged after police say he was allegedly carrying 27 grams of cocaine and 15 grams of ketamine, ABC News reports.
Victoria Police has acknowledged this and said they were aware of the drug-testing services at Beyond the Valley.
“Under the new legislation, it is not a criminal offence to possess small amounts of illicit drugs if you are attending a drug-checking place as a client. As a result, officers will not be attending these sites unless responding to incidents requiring police attendance,” Victoria Police said.
“Police will continue to enforce against drug offences away from the drug-checking place and seize any illicit substances. As always, police may use discretion to not enforce possession offences.
“Victoria Police has zero tolerance for drug traffickers and officers will have no hesitation arresting and charging someone for this offence, no matter where it occurs.”
Both men have been charged and are set to face court in Geelong on March 12, 2025.
